The short answer
Toddlers climb because climbing is a gross-motor milestone, not misbehaviour. The urge usually appears between 7 and 12 months, often before a child walks independently, and it builds strength, balance, spatial awareness and confidence. It's very much a biological drive and a milestone, not something you can (or should want to) switch off. What you can do is anchor your furniture, clear your high surfaces and give your child something built for climbing, so that scary bookshelves or grills stop being the only option.
Three things to do this week
- Anchor every tall item (dressers, bookshelves, TV units) to the wall with L-brackets.
- Clear anything tempting off your high surfaces. Remove the incentive and you remove a good deal of the climbing.
- Give the urge to climb somewhere safe to go, indoors, on a surface that can absorb a fall.
Why do toddlers climb on everything?
Because a small child's body is following an instinct that was set long before they were born.
When your toddler scales the coffee table, it can feel like a test of your patience. Really, they're working through a gross-motor stage. Climbing often turns up before a child walks on their own, which surprises most parents, since we tend to assume walking comes first.
Norwegian researcher Ellen Beate Hansen Sandseter has spent two decades studying what she calls risky play: thrilling, challenging play that involves uncertainty and a risk of physical injury. Of the categories she identified, play with great heights comes first, and climbing is the most frequent form it takes. Children climb everything climbable, from furniture and playground frames to rocks and slopes.
Ever watched a barely-crawling baby somehow grab hold of the couch and haul themselves halfway up? That moment, part terrifying and part hilarious, is one of the most ordinary things a small human does.
After watching hundreds of children on our frames, here's what stands out to me: climbing is really a question of confidence as much as movement. What people miss is that while climbing looks frightening to us, it's frightening for the child too. It's exciting and a little scary at the same time. They're thrilled to be reaching somewhere they've never reached, and nervous because they're higher than they've ever been.
That mixed feeling turns out to be well documented. Sandseter found that children's emotional responses to risky play run all the way from pure exhilaration, through a state where excitement borders on fear, to fear itself. That very ambiguity is what draws children to it, and it's worth knowing that the nervous edge is part of the appeal rather than a sign that something is wrong.
Is toddler climbing normal, or a sign of something else?
For almost every toddler, this is simply ordinary development.
Sandseter and Kennair's 2011 paper in Evolutionary Psychology proposed that risky play serves an anti-phobic function: by climbing to heights that mildly frighten them, children expose themselves to a fear and gradually master it, which the authors associate with less fear of heights and obstacles later in life.
More recent work points in the same direction. A 2026 review in the Journal of Motor Learning and Development reported that children who engaged more willingly with physical risks in play showed more efficient risk assessment in traffic, without an increase in dangerous crossings.
What does climbing actually build?
Strength and coordination. Pulling up, stepping over and getting down again recruits arms, legs and core together. Sandseter and Kennair describe risky play as practice that develops muscle strength, endurance and skeletal quality.
Balance and spatial awareness. Climbing gives a child information about where their body is in space, how far they can reach, and how high is genuinely high.
Problem-solving. Every new surface is an unstructured puzzle. Where does the foot go? How much weight will this hold? They work it out for themselves, without instructions and without an adult solving it for them.
Confidence. A child who talks themselves into a climb they were unsure about learns something about their own capability that no amount of praise can supply.
Daily movement. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics recommends that young children get at least three hours of physical activity of any intensity daily, including at least one hour of moderate-to-vigorous intensity, which lines up with the World Health Organization movement guidance the American Academy of Pediatrics also endorses. In a Mumbai flat during monsoon, that target is hard to hit outdoors. Indoor climbing is one of the few ways to bank a meaningful share of it without leaving the house.
When do toddlers start climbing? A milestone timeline
No two children move at the same pace. One thing worth knowing before you read this table: the CDC revised its milestone checklists in 2022. Milestones are now defined as what 75% or more of children can do by a given age, rather than the halfway point. Several motor milestones moved later as a result, so a timeline you read a few years ago may not match the current one.
If your child isn't pulling to stand by around 12 months, or you have any concern about how they're moving, that's a conversation with your paediatrician.

Which surfaces in your home are actually dangerous?
The real question is whether a surface was ever designed to hold a child.
Sofas and beds are generally fine: low, broad and stable. Purpose-built climbing frames are the other safe category, designed for heights small bodies can manage, with grip underfoot and a base that doesn't shift. The surfaces below are the ones to watch.

How do you make your home safe for a climber?
1. Anchor everything tall
This is the highest-value action, and the CPSC data is stark. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that around 11,000 children are treated in emergency rooms each year for tip-over injuries (2016–2018 average).
The mechanism is the one this article is about. CPSC reports that the most common scenario involves toddlers who climbed onto, fell against, or pulled themselves up on furniture. Most often these involve furniture: 64% involved a chest, dresser or bureau, the pieces whose drawers double as a staircase.
Bolt tall furniture to the wall. L-brackets and a carpenter will handle it in an afternoon. Note that India has no equivalent of the US STURDY Act, which mandates stability testing for dressers, so you cannot assume anything you've bought has been tested for tip-over resistance.
2. Clear the high surfaces
A climber climbs toward something. Snacks, phones, remotes and toys on top of a shelf are the reason the shelf gets climbed.
3. Sort out what's underneath
Most climbing-safety advice online is written for homes with wall-to-wall carpet. Indian homes tend to be tile, marble, kota stone or polished concrete, surfaces with effectively no shock absorption.
Playground surfacing is rated under ASTM F1292 using a Head Injury Criterion to establish a critical fall height. For toddler equipment under roughly four feet, published industry guidance puts adequate foam at roughly 16mm to 38mm, with high-density tiles at 38mm tested to a four-foot critical fall height. For active toddlers on hard floors, 25mm to 40mm is described as a more forgiving surface.
Two points that matter specifically on Indian floors:
- A 25mm mat over fitted carpet performs very differently from the same mat over concrete or ceramic tile. Hard subfloors increase the cushioning required, and thin mats bottom out: the foam compresses fully and the child still meets the floor.
- Don't place a climbing frame on top of soft matting. It destabilises the base. Mat the landing area around the frame, with the frame itself on firm floor.
One honest caveat: a very soft or deep surface can make it harder for small children to balance while they're taking early steps, and it can also cause ankles to twist for older kids using it to break a landing, so deeper isn't automatically better. The right firmness and thickness are both important considerations.
4. Supervise the height, rather than the child
You don't need to hover over them. What matters is being within reach when they're higher than they've been before, and then letting them work out the way down themselves, which most children find harder than going up.
Why does redirecting work better than saying no?
Because saying "no" takes away the outlet while leaving the drive completely intact.
The urge to climb doesn't switch off simply because a parent objects. It just moves, usually to whichever surface is free when you're not looking. Redirection works on a gentler principle: you let the child keep climbing, and you change where they do it. "Not the window grills, come climb over here."
This is why the answer lies in the environment rather than in discipline. Rather than training the climbing out of your child, you're giving a natural developmental drive a safe place to land.
How does a Pikler triangle channel the climbing urge?
A Pikler triangle is a wooden climbing frame with graduated rungs, designed so that a child climbs only as far as their own ability allows, with no lifting them on and no lifting them off.
That last part is really the whole idea. Emmi Pikler, the Hungarian paediatrician behind it, held that children should reach each stage of movement under their own power, at their own pace. A child who cannot yet reach the third rung simply doesn't get there, which is a more reliable safety mechanism than adult judgement.
Practically, it replaces an unpredictable rotation of furniture with one stable surface at a height you've chosen: a frame that doesn't tip, with rungs spaced for small hands.

Who a Pikler triangle suits, and who should skip it
Worth it if: your child is pulling to stand or already climbing furniture; you live in a flat with limited outdoor access; you want one piece of equipment that stays useful for several years.
Skip it if: your child isn't yet pulling to stand, in which case it will sit unused, with no benefit to starting early. If your floor plan can't take the space it needs (the standard wall position wants roughly 4ft by 4ft of clear floor, plus about 6ft 5in of height on the wall). And if your child already has daily access to a safe outdoor play structure, the case is genuinely weaker.
The honest limitation: a Pikler triangle doesn't stop furniture climbing on its own. Children who have one will still climb the sofa. What it does is give the urge a better default and take pressure off every other surface in the house. We would still urge you to anchor all the loose shelves and similar to the wall even if you choose to buy one.

Will it make my child climb furniture more?
No. The drive is already there. What changes is that a better option now exists at floor level.
Is it safe on tile or stone floors?
The frame is. The landing area is what needs attention: as in the matting section above, 25mm to 40mm around the frame, not underneath it.
Is a Pikler triangle covered by an Indian safety standard?
Yes. Toys and play equipment for children under 14 sold in India fall under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) through the Toys (Quality Control) Order, which has been mandatory since January 2021. A compliant product carries the BIS Standard Mark (the ISI mark) with a licence number, showing it has been tested against the Indian toy-safety standard IS 9873. When you buy any climbing frame, look for that mark, or ask the maker for their BIS licence number.
